MOTOR TRANSPORT
4-ton Utility (Cabling) Vehicle, Type 3

1. General
This Instruction describes the 4-ton Utility (Cabling) Vehicle, Type 3. The main difference between this vehicle and the Types 1 and 2 is that a crew cab to seat 4/5 men has been provided to render the use of an associated Landrover personnel carrier unnecessary. This vehicle can tow a fully loaded cable drum trailer of 5 tons overall weight.

2. Description
A general view of the vehicle is shown in Fig. 1. Notable features are the forward exhaust system, front towing attachment, amber reflectors on the side of the front mudguards and body, ventilated crew cab, vehicle tool box, gas cylinder locker, under floor long tool lockers, and the coach built body with glass fibre translucent roof. The three-quarter rear view in Fig. 2 shows the under floor long tool lockers, the locker for Lamps, Road, Caution and fuel, the rear roller shutter, the hydraulic tail-lift and operating control, the exit pipe for the Rod, Continuous, and the heavy and light towing hitches.

3. Cab
Fig. 3 illustrates the 4/5 man crew cab. The driver and one crew member are seated on either side of the engine compartment. Between the seats are the gear lever and the power take off control.

The third and fourth members of the crew are accommodated on seats over the near- and off-side lockers. A fold up table (Fig. 4) is situated over the centre off-side locker, and a further seat may be fitted over the centre near-side locker if required. A fire extinguisher is fitted to the front of the centre off-side locker, and the first aid box is secured by straps to the cab side adjacent to the near-side rear seat. Cab heaters are provided, together with windscreen demisters and a roof ventilator.

4. Body
The coach built body (Fig. 5) is based on a wooden frame covered with aluminium sheet on the exterior and plywood on the interior. The roof is of translucent resin bonded glass fibre to give good illumination during daylight. Two 15 watt fluorescent lights are fitted centrally to the roof spars. Near-side, off-side and forward racks are fitted with adjustable shelving. Three Drums, Rope and a Trolley for Drums, Rope may be secured under the forward rack. The Rod, Continuous is secured under the near-side rack and mechanical aids such as the Pump, Portable, 2 in., P.E.D. may be accommodated under either the near or off-side racks. The floor area between the racks is kept clear for the accommodation of Drums, Cable up to three feet in width and I ton in weight. A Ladder No. 4A or 5 may be carried on top of the off-side racking. The roller shutter is secured to the sides of the rear opening frame by a double bolt controlled by a central hasp; this may be secured by a padlock. The tail-lift is secured in the closed position by the operating control under the near-side rear by means of a hasp and Padlock with Keys, l.25 in.

5. Lockers
Three lockers accessible from either side of the vehicle, extend the full width of the body for accommodating long tools such as Rod, Cane; Bar, Digging; Guide, Cable, Flexible and the attachments for the tail-lift. Further lockers on the off- and near-sides are for carrying propane gas cylinders, Lamps, Road, Caution and fuel.

6. Tail-lift
The tail-lift has a maximum capacity of 1 ton. With the engine running the power take off lever should be engaged while the clutch is depressed. The check valve (Fig. 2) should then be unscrewed and the padlock and hasp removed from the lower operating control, when the tail-lift can be operated by moving the control in the direction of the required movement.

The platform of the lift is lowered to the horizontal position by hand, after releasing the two safety catches (Fig. 2). The upper operating control is situated inside the body vertically above the lower control. Channel sections and chocks are provided to enable Drums, Cable to be lifted in safety. Small ramps facilitate rolling the drums onto the tail-board fittings.

Operators must take care to keep their feet clear of the tail-board when operating the lift. A warning notice to this effect is displayed on the rear of the vehicle.

7. Towing
Heavy and light towing hitches are fitted (Fig. 5). The rear lights are extended to the trailer by means of a double contact S.B.C. lamp holder fixed to the underside of the body. A vacuum tail pipe is provided for extension of the braking system to the trailer. With a full load on the vehicle, a trailer of 5 tons gross moving load may be towed, on the heavy hitch. Number plates for use on trailers, one rectangular and one square, are kept in the vehicle tool box.

8. Coat hooks are provided in the body for hanging protective clothing.

9. Security
The body is made secure by fixing padlocks to the roller shutter hasp and to the external tail-lift operating control. Should the tail-lift be lowered before the roller shutter has been unlocked, no damage will occur, since the shutter is locked against the sides and not to the tail-board. Each external tool and equipment locker is provided with means for padlocking.

10. Re-enamelling or re-touching
The outside of the van has a synthetic enamel finish. Attempts to re-touch any scratched or damaged parts should not be made by staff using the vehicle; work of this nature will be undertaken by the Workshop Supervisor/Mechanic-in-charge when necessary and during periodic overhauls.
