Control Tower Microphone Desk Type 3 (10A/9597)

Effectively a Pedestal or Candlestick telephone without a receiver or switch hooks.

They were used by the RAF/Air Ministry for the runway control tower to communicate with aircraft.

They were designated the Control Tower Microphone Desk Type 3 (10A/9597).

These are marked 10A on the base.

The Microphone unit will be marked No. 22 PX.  This is the GPO designation and they called it a Transmitter No. 22.  It consisted of a body containing a Transmitter-inset and covered with a Mouthpiece No. 16.  The PX is the designation for the manufacture and in this case it would be The Phoenix telephone manufacturing company.  This type of Transmitter was introduced around 1930.

Used in WW2 and withdrawn in the 1950's.
