Telephone No. 162 The Telephone No. 162 was the first Bakelite telephone to be produced. The very first Telephones No. 162 were fitted with cast iron bases, which can be identified by their thin, curved edges. These were replaced by a flat, square edged, Bakelite plate, some of which were weighted down with a lead weight, fixed to the top of the Bakelite base. This was called the Part 1/SBA/2 and would be colour matched to the telephone. The Black coloured base was made form Phenolic Resin. A base with an integral drawer was then introduced and this was called the Base, Telephone No. 1/162. The telephone was also renumbered as the Telephone No. 1/162. The base, Drawer No. 1/162 had an integral tray, which pulled out to expose a transparent plastic envelope which was designed to contain a dialing code card. Originally the envelope was produced from "Astralon". This part comprised of:- 1 x Part No. 1/SBA/7 (Base plate moulding) 1 x Part 1/DFA/1 (Tray face plate) 1 x Part 1/SAH/6 (Tray handle) 1 x Part 1/SCO/31 (Transparent envelope) 1 x D1/62833 or D/62076 (Tray - complete with all parts) Drawing for Base, Telephone No. 1/162 - 90117. Telephone No. 232 The Telephone No. 232 was a technical update the No. 162 but retained the same casing and base parts. The Telephone No. 232 had a flat base whilst the Telephone No. 1/232 was fitted with the Base, Drawer No. 1/162. In the late 1930's some of the Base, Drawer No. 1/162's were fitted with a polished metal plate, embossed with the words GPO. This plate covered the transparent envelope.
