SIP

This article is about SIP line or Trunks.  A SIP trunk is a line that operates using the SIP protocol over an IP network.  SIP lines can be provided from one to as many as you can afford.

This article is mainly about single line users so the equipment required is small and manageable.

Firstly a provider must be found and there are lots of them.  Hopefully they will have a document that describes the programming required on your router.

Secondly a telephone interface called an ATA is also required, which translates the SIP data into an old fashioned  telephone line.  Your provider may try and sell you one or you can buy the ATA of your choice.  It plugs into your router with a CAT 5 cable.

The real advantage of SIP working is that as the phone service is separate from the broadband service and you can change telephone line providers without having to worry about loosing the number.

It looks like most people use the call plan on their mobile for outgoing calls, so SIP is a cheap method of retaining your national number.

Below is some information, that was sent to me, giving details of hardware and providers and the information is provided with no guarantees.  I suggest you also look around the internet for other providers and equipment prices.

Hardware (ATA)
The Grandstream HT801 is about £40 and has single phone port but models with more ports are available.

Check out Grandstream HT801 Analog Telephone Adapter (voipon.co.uk)

Note that pulse dialling is supported.

This ATA does need an RJ11-BT adapter and older phones will need one with a capacitor.

A&A settings for the ATA can be found at  VoIP Phones - Grandstream HT8xx - AAISP Support Site

Some technical ability is required but no need to worry about most of the settings.

Phone service
A&A are recommended.

£1.20 to set up a number, £15 to port a number then £1.44 a month rental.

Calls cost about 1.25p a minute but prices can be found her - (A&A) VoIP: Learn more (aa.net.uk)

You get fully itemised billing and a web control page.
