Cords, Instrument are standard made up cords for use with
telephone apparatus. Most have connectors at both ends, with a length
of "Cordage, Instrument" between.
Originally the GPO named cords "Cords, Instrument" followed
by three or more figures, with or without an additional descriptive word.
The first digit represents the number of conductors in the cord and the
remaining digits have no significance and are effectively the cord number. The descriptive word is only
used when there are differences in the cover of the same cord. An
example would be - Cord, Instrument No. 102 Black. This equates to a 1
conductor cord, cord number 02, with a black covering.
The GPO then changed the way they named cords in the 1930's and the description consists of the words "Cords, Instrument" followed
by two numbers separated by an oblique stroke, the compound number being
followed by a suffix letter, colour and length.
1st number - number of conductors.
2nd number - cord number.
Suffix Letters - type of construction.
Colour - outer covering colour.
Length - Length of cord.
An example would be - Cords, Instrument No. 1/20F, Black, 18".
This equates to a 1 conductor cord, the cord number 20, the construction is F
(Braided with rubber insulated copper conductors and a strong outer
covering), the colour is black and the length is 18".
Note that a Cord No. 102 is the same as a Cord No. 1/02.
Cord No. 102 was the original naming convention.
Some cords are waterproof. These were used in situations were
water may come into contact with the cord (i.e. Coinboxes) and in
situations were the cord may get damp and make electrical contact with
a metal casing.
