LOCATOR No. 2A

This Instruction describes methods which may be used for tracing the routes of underground PO cables, mains electricity cables and other metallic services, for finding their precise positions and depths. The apparatus required for this work is listed in paragraph 3 of TI A2 A1001, under the collective description Locator No. 2A. The individual items of equipment are described and illustrated in the same Instruction.

The standard method for locating a cable makes use of an inductive coil, audio frequency amplifier and headgear receiver, for detecting an alternating magnetic field set up by an audio frequency current within the service being located. For electricity supply cables the mains power within the cable produces an audible hum (consisting of 50 Hz plus a number of higher harmonics) which is detected by the Search Coil No. 2B.
