DESICCATORS, TRAILER MOTOR
Application
Used to pump dry air through cables for desiccating purposes. To improve cable
insulation and help to keep damaged cables in service until permanent repair can
be effected.
General description
A 10-h.p. petrol engine drives a twin cylinder air compressor delivering 2-10
cu. ft./min. of air to the cable, the bulk of which passes through one of two
beds of silica gel. These two beds are used alternately, one to dry the air
which is being supplied to the cable by one or more of three outlets provided,
the other itself being dried or reactivated by the application of heat extracted
from the exhaust gases of the petrol engine by the remainder of the air.
The change-over from one bed of silica gel to the other is
effected by the movement of a single lever. Each bed contains approx. 45lb. of
silica gel and is capable of continuous use for 8 hours. Windows in the
containers and a colour chart are provided so that the condition of the silica
gel can be readily determined.
A safety valve is provided which operates at 30 +/- 2 lb./sq.
in. The unit is mounted on a two wheel trailer with over-run brakes with a
steady leg at each corner for the working position.

Remarks
The cycle of absorption and reactivation may be repeated indefinitely without
deterioration of the silica-gel, other than a slight powdering action due to
