HEADSETS, RECEIVERS, HEADGEAR and BREASTPLATE TRANSMITTERS | |||||||
Before the introduction of the light weight headset in the late 1950's, which incorporated the transmitter and receiver into one unit, the transmitter and receiver were supplied as two separate units. These were commonly known as the Breast Plate Transmitter and were generally used by switchboard operators or test clerks. The transmitter was mounted on a plate which hung from the neck, resting on the breast, which gave it the nickname a breast plate transmitter, even though the official title was 'Transmitter'. The receiver was an earpiece, connected to a head band, and was called a 'Receivers, Headgear'.
