OVERHEAD CONSTRUCTION
POLE NOTICES & PLATES, CAUTION

The GPO used warning plates in different areas of the business and these were named "Plates Caution".  Some of these plates could be affixed to poles.

Engineering Instructions, Lines, Overhead, A5120 - States........
1, General
This Instruction details the notices to be fixed to poles in localities where appreciable damage due to the throwing of stones is experienced, or where the posting of bills on poles is prevalent.

2. Stone throwing
W hen the breakage of insulators is persistent in any locality, "Plates, Caution, No. 11" should be fixed on poles on which the damage has occurred.

3. When a conviction has been secured in any neighbourhood where damage due to the throwing of stones is prevalent, printed bills giving particulars of the conviction should be displayed on "Boards for Stone-throwing Bills." These boards should be attached to the poles at a height not less than 8 ft. from the ground, and the bills should be treated with size, and varnished, so as to protect them from the effects of the weather.

4. Copies of such notices should be distributed to schools in neighbourhoods where convictions are obtained, and they should also be displayed in the windows or on the notice boards at Post Offices in the same localities.

5. Bill-posting
"Plates, Caution, No. 9," should be fixed in neighbourhoods where the posting of bills upon the Department's poles is prevalent. The plates should be fixed on alternate poles or at such other intervals as may be considered necessary.
