PANASONIC
ANALOGUE TELEPHONES USING RJ11

Many Panasonic telephone systems use the RJ11 plug for extension wiring connections.  In the UK many installations will use adaptors to convert the RJ11 to the UK standard telephone plug.

When connecting a featurephone to the system a Secondary adaptor should be used as this contains no capacitor or resistor.  The 4 wires just go through the adaptor and this will work fine.  This adaptor must have 4 wires.

When connecting analogue telephones to analogue only ports then a Master adaptor must be used, but one must be wary of the Master adaptor used when connecting an analogue device via a featurephone port.

It has been found that some Master adaptors have a capacitor and/or resister which is connected as if it is a Master wall socket.  In this case there is connectivity between the 4 wires, which causes problems on all ports of the system card in use.

There are two ways to resolve this issue:-

  1. Purchase Master adaptors that only have two wires connected in the RJ11 plug (Amazon has some evidently).

  2. Purchase Secondary adaptors and wire the telephone for two wire working only, utilising the telephones own capacitor for ringing purposes.

The RJ11 plug is wired with American colours - Black, Red, Green and Yellow.  The Red and Green wires supply dial tone to an analogue telephone.
