PANASONIC SYSTEMS FOR COLLECTORS

Panasonic systems are very robust and for this reason many telephone collectors use them.  Most of the models can accept analogue telephones with dials.  This is a little unusual today as most systems only work with DTMF phones.

The systems also have analogue trunk ports which can be used with standard copper exchange lines or an Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA).  An ATA can be used with the new IP Networks being installed in the UK and you would need to confirm with your provider that an ATA will work on their network.

Whilst a system maybe analogue and dial compatible many are not expandable above their maximum number of extensions.  Some will require expansion cards so if your requirements are above the standard build please be minded to confirm the system meets your needs before purchase as the expansion cards and in some cases, the special PCB risers, can be hard to obtain.

The information in the Panasonic section was taken from numerous sources so check before purchase.

The Panasonic models known to work with dial telephones are:-

KX-TA range (TA624 confirmed - see below)
KX-TE range (TES824 confirmed - see below.  TEA confirmed)
KX-TD range (TD816 and TD1232 confirmed - see below)
KX-TDA range (TDA30 confirmed - see below)

Collectors using Panasonic Systems
KX T206E

This is programmable with a DTMF phone, supports LD and uses minimal power. A great system to get started with. The only downside is it uses DDK connectors rather than RJ’s so you need to check they are present when buying the system.

KX TA624
When purchased the system has 3 analogue trunks and 16 extensions, which can be digital or analogue, but it can be expanded to a 6 x 24.  Some of the available expansion cards support DTMF/LD only, not proprietary phones. Despite the cards themselves being readily available, fitting them also requires proprietary PCB risers which seem very hard to find.

A KX-T7730 digital display can be used for programming and the analogue telephones will require RJ11 to BT adapters with capacitors so the bells work.

The extension ports can be used for analogue phones which use pins 3 and 4 and digital phones which use 3 and 4 for audio and 2 and 5 for data.

KX TA624
3 x Panasonic KX-TA624's interconnected (all 6 x 24).  The Exchange lines are connected to BT Copper, C*Net and Soho66 VoIP via Grandstream HT812 and Vodafone (Via Cell2Jack).

KX TES824
This model supports up to 8 x CO trunks and 24 x Extension lines, with both LD and DTMF dialling.  The later version (2005?) features a USB connection for PC programming - make sure you get one with a USB port.  All ports are RJ11.  For 3-wire operation, an RJ11 to BT431A with ring capacitor is required.

To programme via computer, a PC with Windows XP or earlier is required.  Alternatively, a ‘service telephone’ can be used.  Telephone type KT-77xx are compatible.

KX TD816 and 1232

3 x KX-TD 816 and a KX-TD 1232 in use and networked together.  These support both analogue and digital extension.  The 816 is 8 trunks and 16 extensions although can support 32 extensions, 16 +16 basically.  The 1232 is 12 trunks / 32 extensions and again it can support 32 + 32 and you can join two systems together to double capacity.  Later versions of software, probably after version 4, also support PRI & BRI cards in the 816.  The switches are currently being tested as Gateways between Strowger to VoIP and vice versa, with the KX-TD 1232 fitted with analogue trunks that support both LD or DTMF.

KX TDA30
This system most useful of the two small KX-TDA's made.  The other visually identical one is the KX-TDA15 which is not so useful as it requires a not-very-easily available 2-port analogue exchange-line card.

The system is fitted with 4 multi-purpose (4-analogue and 4-digital) combined extension ports. Another 4 digital phones can be piggy backed on to the 4-digital ports.  The system will also accept an additional 4-port analogue extension card or an 8-port digital extension card.

Analogue extension ports can work with LD and MF4. The exchange lines will also work with LD or MF4.
