PNEUMATIC TUBE SYSTEMS

| Over the years the
pneumatic systems were gradually taken out of use, but were generally fitted
in later large exchanges where an Operator suite and Test Desk existed. The Test Desk was an engineering function where engineers tested telephone lines / private circuits and distributed work to the external maintenance staff. A tube system was used to send dockets to and from the operator suite. One operator was generally allocated the task of docketing complaints from customers. The system was simple, with just one small electric blower plus a receiving terminal, with basket and a despatching terminal at each end. The pictures below show each end of the tube system and are still operational at Milton Keynes Museum at Stacey Hill, where they have a large telephony display. The blue foam is to prevent people pushing their fingers through the grill.
