BOMB DAMAGE

In 1971 a bomb was left on the lower viewing gallery of the GPO Tower in London and exploded when the gallery was closed.

Luckily the damage was confined to a small area of the tower and no structural damage occurred.  There was more danger to people below the tower as the debris rained down on the streets and buildings below.

The damage was repaired, but the viewing galleries remained permanently shut for security reasons and even Butlins lease was not renewed in 1980.
