PRINTING REPERFORATOR

The printing reperforator used by the G.P.O. is basically a tape Teleprinter with a perforator attachment. There are two types of machine, one with a keyboard and transmitting unit, the Printing Reperforator No. 1, and another, the Printing Reperforator No. 2, which has only receiving equipment. Both types of machine perforate and print the received message on a parchmentised tape.   The message is printed along the lower edge of the tape and is superimposed on the 4th and 5th code perforations. The perforating mechanism is adjacent to the type head and perforates the tape such that a printed character is displaced eight printing spaces to the right from its associated perforations.

The perforating Teleprinter keyboard is the same of a standard Teleprinter but has the following three additional keys:-

  • Who are you - when pressed, the answer-back code of the other installation is printed on both machines.

  • Here is - when pressed, the Teleprinter sends it's own answer-back code which is printed on both machines.

  • Run-out - When this key is held down the last character typed is printed and punched continuously.  Used to feed the message on paper clear of the reperforator so that it can be torn off.

Printing Reperforator No. 1
Generally similar in construction to the Teleprinter No. 7B, but with perforating unit in place of the page-printing attachment. It
produces printing and chadless perforations on a single tape.

Receiving cam is fitted with orientation device. An end-of  line lamp and tape-reel-exhaustion contacts are provided.

Mechanism is provided to prevent the perforation of WRU (secondary of D) on the tape.

Creed Model No. 85.

Printing Reperforator No. 1A
Used on automatic switching networks. Similar to Printing Reperforator No. 1 but has additional features as fitted to Teleprinter No. 7D but the page-printing attachment is replaced by a perforating unit that produces priming and "chadless" perforations on a single paper tape. End-of-line and tape-exhaustion contacts are provided, together with a mechanism for preventing the perforation of the WRLI signal.

Printing Reperforator No. 1B
As Printing Reperforator No. 1A but has overlap-cam receiving mechanism with improved receiving margin.

Printing Reperforator No. 1D
As for Printing Reperforator No. 1 No. 1D/ but produces fully-perforated 8in. tape with printing along the lower margin.

Printing Reperforator No. 2
Similar to Printing Reperforator No. 1 but has no keyboard.

Creed model No. 85R.
