This site is mainly about telephones but included here is a small selection of
BPO Telegraphy items, including a large section on the UK Central Telegraph Office.
Telegraphy was used to transmit telegrams on a very large scale before the introduction of the telephone and continued
into the eighties. It was the fore runner of the digital age and was
connected worldwide!
These pages are more about the general operation of the telegraph system and the
apparatus involved, rather than an in depth
technical description of the working principles. What must be
remembered is that unlike fax or email, Telex has full “legal document
status" in every country of the world. It carries proof of receipt as well
as proof of sending due to its unique electronic handshake on each message.
