The Teleprinter No. 3A is the standard machine used in the British
Inland Telegraph service. In 1933 there were about 2000 in use.
Made by Creed and Co. of Croydon, England, this machine printed on paper tape by means of a typehead. It had a start-stop combined tape printing and transmitting unit. This machine runs at 49baud. The unit signal is 20.4 milli-seconds with a speed of 392 letters per minute, each letter taking a minimum of 153 milli-sceonds. W, X, Y and Z types comprise the A type modified (fitted with answer-back unit) and have special features (improved lubrication, etc.) A break down of parts and wiring diagrams can be found in Technical Instruction No. 31.
