The telephone above was designed for offices, hotels etc.  It has a special "Hygienic easy-to-clean germ resistant handset".  At the turn of the last century people were afraid of all kinds of epidemics, that were common at that time.  The usual trumpet shaped mouthpiece easily collected germs, so many people used their own removable mouthpiece of their own.

This Hygiene handset was popular in places where different people used the same phone.
