APPROVAL STATUS
Approved as described in PXML BABT/PXML/3 PBX.0080 which is updated as further
enhancements are approved.
Approved for direct connection to the PSTN using loop disconnect or MF signalling or by
working as a (List A) subsidiary system (loop disconnect or MF signalling) connected to a
(List C) PBX.
SOFTWARE
Software level REL 01 is approved for use with Norstar. It is provided on a cartridge
which plugs into the CCU. The cartridge must not be removed/replaced with the system
powered up.
A Functional Earth is only provided when earth recall is required.
Although extensions only require single pair cabling, multi-pair cabling should be used.
The single pair terminates on terminals 3 and 4 of a secondary Line Jack Unit (LJU).
The approval requirement for Norstar is that one power fail (master) LJU must be provided
on systems with up to five exchange lines, a second LJU must be provided when all six
exchange lines are provided.
A Station Auxiliary Power Supply (SAPS) can be fitted to the extension LJU which
increases the extension line length from 300 to 790 metres.
Testing has shown the Compact to have very good immunity to mains interference. External
filters (e.g. BT Protector Mains 2A & 4B, ONEAC) need not be fitted as standard.

KNOWN PROBLEMS
Trunk lines
These are polarity conscious. If reversed then incoming calls will work as normal but outgoing calls will not receive dial
tine and the call will fail.
MERIDIAN NORSTAR COMPACT PLUS
The BT Meridian Norstar Compact Plus is supplied as 0 lines and 16
key extensions. The CCU differs from the original Compact (see above) in
that it has 2 slots for the installation of either 4 port
analogue trunk cards (must be global type) or 8 channel BRI
cards, which are switchable between ISDN2 lines and S0
extensions. A clock card is required when installing a BRI
card into the compact (one per system). The Compact Plus also
has an in-built Analogue Terminal Adaptor (ATA) within the
CCU, this provides one analogue extension port for the
connection of a two wire device such as a fax machine.
