The KX-T616 was produced very briefly and almost immediately replaced by the KX-T61610.  The KX-T616 also has an additional Amphenol 50-pin connector for the extensions. The KX-T616 was less flexible than the KX-T61610 in terms of features and almost immediately obsoleted by it.

KX-T616 and KX-T61610 is native 6 lines and 16 telephones which can be analogue phones with either pulse or DTMF dials, or Panasonic proprietary multi-line phones. No expansion cards are required or available. All six lines and 16 extensions are built in and terminate on individual RJ11 style jacks.  On the KT-T616 The extensions could also be wired out by means of a 25 pair Amphenol connector which plugged into the rear of the unit.

Both models supported music on hold, paging and a serial port but only the KX-T61610 could have the optional doorphone connected.

It requires at least one Featurephone, the KX-T7130E for programming purposes.

The telephones can be programmed as "hotline" or auto-ringdown for non-dial common-battery manual sets where it will automatically ring a specific extension or outside number when going off hook.

Panasonic refers to these as an Electronic Modular Switching System.

There was also a baby brother to the KX-T61610, the KX-T30810 with three lines and eight telephones. This system had the same features as the KX-T61610.

The Panasonic KX-T61610 phone system is compatible with these Panasonic analogue system phones: KX-T7730, KX-T7030, KX-T7131, KX-T7020, and the KX-T7750 Desk Phones.
