The Area General Planning & Vehicle Purpose (AP/GP)
Under evaluation

Taken from External Plant News - No. 57 April 1981

The Area Planning and General Purpose Vehicle (AP/GP) Type 5, based on the Dodge van, is divided into three sections, the cab, an office area and a tools and plant compartment, each separated by a bulkhead. Access to the office area is by means of the side door behind the cab. To improve visibility to the rear of the vehicle from within the office area when opening the side door, a second mirror has been fitted to the passenger door mirror arm. The second mirror is mounted above the driving mirror and is adjusted to provide a full-length view of the side of the vehicle from the office area. It is not visible from the driver's seat because it is masked by the door pillar.

A second modification is a duct stowage rack designed to carry 3-metre lengths of Duct No. 56 (2 inch diam. PVC duct) for use on those AP/GP Type 5 vehicles which are allocated to Estate Liaison Officer duties. The rack is fitted to the nearside of the vehicle and up to 10 lengths of duct can be carried. The ducts can be placed in or removed from the rack from the side of the vehicle without the need for a rear step. The mild steel fittings are black nylon dipped and the stays supporting the front and back plates act as guides for vehicle washing
plant brushes. Rubber pads prevent the duct bearing on the roof and a leather strap secures the load in transit. A similar rack has been designed for the Ford Transit based AP/GP.
The extra mirror is under evaluation in the South West Telecommunications Region and the Duct No. 56 stowage rack is being evaluated in both the South West and Eastern Telecommunications Regions.
